Google Glass Goes On Sale to the Public Next Week (but Just for One Day)..!
Anyone in the U.S. with $1,500 and the will to walk around in public with a computer on his or
her face will be able to sign up to do just that next Tuesday. Google announced
on Thursday afternoon that it would offer a "limited" sale of Glass
starting on April 15 at 9 a.m. You can sign up for a reminder email here.
Google
Glass is currently in what's called an "explorer" program — it's not
yet available to Regular Joe and Jane consumers to buy off the shelf. That
won't happen permanently until later this year. The Verge first reported on the Glass flash sale earlier on
Thursday, citing leaked documents from Google. Based on those, it looks like
the company will offer some of its "designer" frames for sale in
addition to the original frame designs. There will be prescription and
sunglasses frames for sale, as well.
In
a blog post about the launch, Google said that it originally planned
to announce the one-day sale next week, "but
it looks like the cat's out of the bag now." Google explains that there
are a "limited" number of spots in the program. While it's not really
clear what Google hopes to gain from its expansion of the "explorer"
program in this manner (besides publicity), they did provide this on the demand
for the product:
Our Explorers are moms, bakers, surgeons, rockers, and each new
Explorer has brought a new perspective that is making Glass better. But every
day we get requests from those of you who haven’t found a way into the program
yet, and we want your feedback too. So in typical Explorer Program fashion,
we’re trying something new.
So
there you have it, aspiring
Glassholes. Google's first and maybe only chance to buy your way past the
waitlist for the explorer program begins and ends on Tuesday. For those who
manage to get a pair, be sure to check out the company's anti-creeper guidelines for using Glass. – source:thewire
